-270 in bethesda. we have live team coverage with a john gonzalez and kris van cleave. brad? >> well, it has become a federal investigation. the team met from the national transportation safety board arrived. they will look at the condition of the bus, the condition of the roadway, and the drivers medical history. the driver has been identified as a 66 year-old joseph a. clabaugh from hanovrer, pennsylvania. he was pronounced dead at the scene. he is the only fatality. when you see the video, you'll find that fact amazing. in the moments after the crash, rescue crews scrambled to tend to the wounded, most of whom were children. for those who rushed to help, that made it were. >> everybody was saying, get the kids up. i helped the first girl -- i held her. they were crying and bleeding. >> there were couple in shock. it was pretty bad. >> pamela was among the first to arrive on scene. she had been driving north when the bus nearly rolled into her path. >> i saw a big white man's come down over the overpass. it careened over. >> what the passengers told her is that they were from carli

are learning new details about a deadly tour bus crash in bethesda. this was the scene along i-270 after the charter bus plowed off a sky ramp rolling 45 feet down an embankment. the accident killed the driver and sent dozens of children to local hospitals. and this morning authorities have identified the victim but are still looking for a cause. mike? >> good morning, pamela. it seems from the national transportation safety board, they will spend the day looking at the condition of the bus, the roadway, work records and the driver's medical history and awaiting autopsyy results for the driver. 66-year-old joseph pronounced dead at the scene. >> everybody was trying to get the kids out. >> when the bus came to a stop, witnesses and rescue crews scrambled to help the injured, mostly children. >> it was in shock. it was a pretty harrowing experience. >> a witness says seconds before the 29-passenger bus crashed through a guardrail and rolled down a 45-foot 'em banks bank ment of 270, the driver appeared to slump over in his seat. >> just prior to entering the sky ramp came down through tr

from the does the north. let's focus on that. -- from a bethesda north. very heavy rain showers. we see this action going on where we see them popping into the south, one after the other. it moves like a train. they move and follow each other successively. that is where we get the heavy rainfall. already 1.5 inches of rain in some areas where you see this red where we have had the heavy showers. that is down towards bethesda as well. that is the area of concern within this polygon west of 95 in howard county with a tornado warning until 12:45 p.m. i did not see much rotation in that storm or getting the upper or lower level blocks from the national weather center, but that is the biggest area of concern. i want to give to the wider view so you have an idea of what is to come. here are the thunderstorm's i mentioned that start in the north and basically follow each other. look at the situation in the south. this is continued in a continuously streaming northward. this is stretching all the way to florida and it is all pushing north. the warm front is making it very monday at least for to

is quiet this early morning. the headlights are leaving college park heading for silver spring and bethesda at the current speed limit. >> consider this when you're stuck on the beltway or one of the other major highways on the way to work. the washington region has some of the worst highway systems in the country. the reason foundation was particularly critical of maryland and the district in the annual highway study. maryland was marked 43rd. it's among the worst of the country. washington received low marks because of traffic and poor pavement conditions. virginia came in at 18th, which is actually six slots lower than a year ago. >>> we're following a developing story in colorado. firefighters worked through the night there. they are trying to contain the massive wildfire that has already destroyed more than 90 homes and buildings. the fire broke out monday morning in boulder county and has been burning out of control ever since. the governor declared a state of emergency and 3,000 were forced to leave their homes. officials are investigating reports that the fire started when a car ran
. a serious bus accident in bethesda. captain roy taylor is with skyteam 11. >> this is the way the scene looks now around 270 northbound, just north of exit one. we have video to show you of what it looked like earlier. shortly after 4:00 this afternoon, a tour bus was in the process of hitting the sky ramp to go northbound onto 70, but for some reason a loss control and ended up hitting portions of a bridge and a guard rail and rolling down about 30 or 40 feet. we understand there was one fatality involved in this accident. four people were trapped inside the bus. there were rescued. two of those people were in critical condition and taken to trauma centers. the other two were serious but not critical. there were least 12 people on the bus at the time of the accident. ntsb has been informed. maryland state police are conducting the investigation and right now northbound to 70 from the inner loop of the beltway is still shut down. -- northbound 270. >> 11 news has confirmed that the baltimore city police department has disbanded one of its drug unit as it investigates allegations of misc

colleague jackie bensen picks up the coverage from here in bethesda. jackie? >> thank you, craig. well, a total of 12 people were taken to local hospitals as a result of this crash. the bus passengers are from carlisle, pennsylvania, which is about 90 miles north of here. there were two groups on that bus. two people, a man and a woman, described as elderly have serious injuries. 're told they were at the smithsonian toda another group fared much better. it was two women and four children, the children ages six, nine, 11 and 12. they visited the national sdpzo toda today. parently one of the women had won the trip in some sort of prize. they were back home when tragedy struck. >> the bus crash that turned monday evening's rush hour into gridlock, the driver, identified as joseph claybaugh, suffered a seizure or possily a hear attack. someone grabbed the wheel as the vehicle ka reasoncareened out o, but the driver was smped over the wel, unconscious. the people were taken to a hospital in bethesda led by a trauma team of dr. bart reynolds. >> we had a trauma team here, we had nursing he

. this happened in bethesda just after 7:00 this morning. the suspect's name is joshua prince. police say he tried to shoot his ex-girlfriend. she filed a protective order against prince just last week. tracee wilkins had more earlier today. >> reporter: montgomery county police are searching for an armed gunman and using everything from police cars to helicopters to armed vehicles. they are receiving assistance from state police. a woman who lives at the avalon apartments in bethesda tells news 4 around 7:20 this morning a woman ran door to door screaming for help saying someone was trying to shoot her. soon after police surrounded the avalon apartments. there were reports of at least one shot fired. montgomery county police say they know who their suspect is. their search to get him into custody led to closing of streets. they closed nearby exits to 270 and locked down walter johnson high school. people in live at the avalon were told to stay in their apartments and those who are out of their apartments were not let back in. >> they are not letting me go back in. i just want to go to work. >> tr

ramp to 45 feet below on the i-270 northbound spur near democracy boulevard in bethesda. fox 5's will thomas filed this report moments. >> reporter: some of the first responders on the scene tell me they heard survivors talking about seeing the driver actually pass out just before the bus trove right off the top of this hov sky ramp on the northbound section of i-270. the driver identified as 66- year-old joseph clabaugh jr. of hanover, pennsylvania. all 11 passengers were transported to the hospital and one person in a car on the ground below involved in a collision, a total of 12 people taken to the hospital by ambulance. we'll give you an update on the seriousness of their injuries in our next report from the hospital, but first let's take you up close to the scene. some of the first footage from the scene shows children being comforted by passers-by, hurt, scared and confused about how this could have happened and what happened. vito majolo is the photographer behind the camera and routinely documents responses of local fire departments. >> there were a number of children in
